“W(H)OMEN IN ARCHITECTURE”
Hello there,
Hope you guys are doing great. So thank you everyone who has read my first blog and still elated to read the second one. I’m really grateful. Lots of love to you guys.
So yes here I’m sharing my second story that I’ve been meaning to talk about it but eventually it’s not so much appreciated to talk it out loud “W(H)OMEN IN ARCHITECTURE”. The term itself is litigious right? So being a woman myself, I sort of really know how it is being in that shoe.
When people everywhere are talking about women empowerment, development, feminism and that goes on. There is this saying that is really provoking “She is a woman architect or female architect” and I must really say I’ve never heard or called some man or my colleagues calling them “He is a man architect” and this thought had really been itching my mind ever since I’ve stepped in to this architecture world. And that’s when I did my research about and really really quite disappointed with the results. As per statistics and researches, that shows more than 41% of women gets enrolled in the architecture course. Well most of you must really think that I must be crazy and say, “Yes. Girl if you can’t accept this as an empowerment and I don’t know what to do?” Yeah I too will think the same until I found that only 20% among them are registered as architects and the bar goes low when we go deep for it and this is for the so called developed countries I’m talking about. Wondering where is the other 80% of them, huh? So yes she’s educated. But “Is she really empowered?” And this does not end here there is more to it. Even one of the world renowned architects or well must I say the women architects like Zaha Hadid had it hard way until she was the first women architect to win the Pritzker Price which is the highest prestigious award in architecture. And the succeeded Pritzker Price women representors not had their way easily either, they have been criticised for their works saying having femininity to it. “What is feminine actually?” and “Care explaining about the masculinity of the building?”
Hey I’m not blaming anyone about this. The women nowadays are breaking this stereotypes and constructing her way through this male dominated profession.
The question is “Should we really call ourselves the millennials?” and “is this what so called gender equity?”
Hey it’s just me ok. Relax now.
Stay connected…
With Love,
The Arch Girl.
Hahaha! What's this post about? Women in architecture? We sometimes end up fantasizing things like Feminism and empowerment and portray it in a really not so right way! How is 20% or 40% of women getting enrolled in architecture schools "Empower" them?
And I'm very sure, Women are not really referred to as "She is a women architect" unlike fields like Cinema, its more acceptive here!
Hey,
